Monster Zucchini!
Yeah, I know – another Zucchini post. I just came back from a 10-day vacation. Right before I left I pollinated a couple of female Zucchini flowers. This is kind of sad, actually. There don’t seem to be enough bees around to do this job. If I don’t use my little makeup brush and play bee, I don’t seem to be getting any Zucchinis. (My wife’s makeup brush that is. :)). Before I went on my trip, I was hoping that one or both of the female flowers would get pollinated and produce fruits. When I checked on the grow bed after my vacation, I was blown away. Check it out:
It doesn’t look all that impressive in these photos. But it is sure a monster. And, it grew in only ten days to that size!
Pretty impressive! I know, some of my friends chimed in and immediately pointed out that the larger they get, the less tasty they are. They are supposedly tasting watery. I will BBQ them up this weekend and be the judge of that.
I made sure that the system was properly ‘doped’ with chelated iron. Iron is one of the inputs necessary to an aquaponics system, otherwise nothing grows.
In this photo I put the Zucchini onto the kitchen island together with a measurement tape. It is about one foot long, 3 inches in diameter and a bit over 10 inches in circumference.
To better put this into perspective, I had my daughter Sarah hold it in front of the camera.
I’m sure I could have let grow for longer. If this one doesn’t taste too watery, I will experiment with the growth on the next one to see how big they can get. Just for fun!
